Abstract
With Taiwan's advance into a super-aged society, the growing care needs associated with chronic diseases, multimorbidity, acute illness, and critical care compounded by the persistent nursing workforce shortage are reshaping the nursing profession. As part of this transition, a growing number of males are entering nursing education and clinical practice as members of gender-diverse teams. However, nursing has long been constructed as a feminized occupation, and its gendered work imaginaries and interactional norms have not dissipated as more males enter its ranks. This article is framed as a professional commentary on the situation of male nurses across the realms of workforce strategy, role construction, caring practice, gender analysis, and resilience development in the context of gender-related stressors. The authors argue that, rather than expecting male nurses to adapt individually to current role models, the current gender order, workforce governance, and caring culture of the nursing profession should be reexamined in light of the reality of a more gender-balanced nursing workforce. Only when individual-level resilience is transformed into an organizationally and institutionally co-constructed system of support can Taiwanese nursing move toward a diverse, equitable, and sustainable future.
