[Resection of a chondrosarcoma of the first metacarpal and reconstruction using composite osteosynthesis : Case report and literature review].

Abstract

Chondrosarcoma is the most common malignant bone tumor of the hand. As conventional chondrosarcomas generally respond poorly to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, surgical resection is crucial.
A 76-year-old woman with a chondrosarcoma of the first metacarpal underwent 2‑stage reconstruction using composite osteosynthesis after tumor resection. After 18 months the functional outcome was satisfactory, with no local recurrence, metastases or implant-associated complications.
Composite osteosynthesis can represent a function-preserving reconstructive option in selected patients.
