Abstract

The benefits of physical activity for people living with cancer are well established. Despite recommendations from numerous scientific societies and the World Health Organization, participation rates in physical activity remain low. In Burkina Faso, no study has specifically explored physical activity practices among people living with cancer. The objective of this study was to analyze the factors associated with physical activity practice in this population in Ouagadougou.
This study was an exploratory survey conducted among Burkinabè patients with cancer. The first part assessed self-reported physical activity practices. The second part explored participants' attitudes, behaviors, and motivation, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Transtheoretical Model.
A total of 168 patients were included in the study between October 1st, 2024, and August 31st, 2025. Participants were recruited from the university hospitals of Yalgado Ouédraogo University Hospital, Bogodogo University Hospital, and Tengandogo University Hospital. The mean age of participants was 47.3 years. Most patients (64.1%) reported not engaging in any physical activity. Participants had a favorable attitude toward adopting physical activity in 57.1% of cases. Perceived behavioral control was favorable among 54.3% of participants. Health insurance coverage and previous engagement in physical activity were significantly associated with the stage of behavioral change.
Physical inactivity remains highly prevalent among people living with cancer, despite the well-known benefits of physical activity. Strategies aimed at improving motivation and reducing barriers to physical activity should be promoted.
