Abstract
This report provides final 2024 mortality rates for suicide and shows changes in rates by age group, sex, and means of suicide between 2023 and 2024, as well as rates by state of residency at death for 2024.
This analysis used National Vital Statistics System underlying cause-of-death mortality data for 2003 through 2024 on CDC WONDER. Suicide deaths were identified using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision underlying cause-of-death codes U03, X60-X84, and Y87.0. Age-adjusted and age-specific death rates (deaths per 100,000 population) were calculated, with differences tested using z tests for pairwise comparisons, and Joinpoint software to evaluate trends.
The overall age-adjusted suicide rate increased from 13.0 deaths per 100,000 standard population in 2014 to 14.0 deaths in 2017, with no significant change between 2017 and 2024 (13.7). Between 2023 and 2024, suicide rates decreased for females in each age group age 25 and older and for males ages 15 to 24 and 25 to 44. For males, rates decreased for suffocation-related suicide, and for females rates decreased for poisoning-related suicide. Suicide rates varied across states, from 5.7 in the District of Columbia to 29.7 in Alaska.
