Abstract
Cornerstones of inhalation therapy are training in the correct use of inhalers and selecting the most suitable method of administration. At the same time, guidelines call for participatory therapy decisions and, increasingly, consideration of ecological impacts.
As part of a 12-month pilot study a practical training tool was developed at the Hospital Havelhöhe in Germany. The tool uses a visual traffic-light system to integrate technique, equipment suitability, sustainability, and climate impacts. The material was iteratively revised in 49 group training sessions (n = 145 patients) based on group feedback, expert opinions, and test runs.
The training tool comprises 2 advisory sheets, one for assessing the inhalation technique and one for assessing the individual suitability of the devices. Sustainability is assessed using a traffic light system. This tool supports participatory decision-making processes and can be used in individual or group settings of up to 8 people.
This tool supports guideline-compliant, patient-centered, and climate-sensitive inhalation therapy. It is intended to be used either as a standalone module or as a supplement to existing training programs.
