Abstract

This review article, focused on the care of the critically ill adult when no intensive care unit (ICU) bed is available, describes current models addressing critical care services in the emergency department (ED), reviews available evidence on the impact of different approaches, and explores best practices in implementation of ED-ICU models. Based on these findings, the article explores potential benefits of leveraging the ED-ICU concept in the regional organization of critical care services.
