Abstract

To assess the current use of single-use digital flexible ureteroscopes(SUDUs) and to better understand which characteristics are considered essential for the future development by current and future users.
We conducted an international, online survey comprising 23 questions, including demographics, practice patterns in stone disease, and expectations regarding 26 characteristics on SUDUs. Participants were certified urologists or in-training. After review by an expert panel, the survey was spread via social media and email and remained open from January 2026 to March 2026. Respondents rated the importance of multiple single-use digital ureteroscope characteristics on a 4-point scale (from "without interest" to "essential"). Data were analyzed descriptively.
A total of 142 respondents from 24 countries completed the survey. Most respondents were consultant with 36% having specific training in endourology. Stone disease represented more than 30% of the activity, and the annual volume of flexible ureteroscopies was mainly more than 50 per year. Single-use digital ureteroscopes were used systematically for 38%, often for 33% and sometimes for 24%. Only 5% never used it. Overall, the highest-rated characteristics were image resolution, bidirectional deflection, torque and robustness whereas deflection lock, zoom, image capture, video capture and freeze image buttons were considered gadget. Cost was the main determining factor in the decision for 59%. The advantage for 80% of respondents of single-use ureteroscopes over reusable devices was management of complex stones without the risk of ureteroscope damage, while the main inconveniences were cost and environmental impact. Regarding future use, respondents anticipated an increase over the next 5 years, and desired to reduce costs and enable reuse or miniaturization due to the environmental impact.
This international survey identifies the features that clinicians consider priorities for next-generation SUDUs, highlighting the importance of improved image quality and durability while also reducing cost and environmental impact. These findings may guide manufacturers in optimizing device design by placing greater emphasis on user needs.
