Abstract

Complete ectogenesis (CE), if technologically realized, would portend a radical decoupling of fetal development from the female body, thereby dismantling the biological and cultural nexus between gestation and kinship. This paper argues that a Confucian approach offers a fruitful framework for critically assessing CE, as it appropriately shifts attention from the moral status or isolated interests of individual entities (such as the fetus, women, or parents) to the quality of relationships-especially the parent-child relationship. From this perspective, CE represents not merely a technical innovation with certain drawbacks, but a morally significant disruption of the relational virtues upon which a good human life depends. When chosen by couples capable of natural reproduction, CE involves the voluntary relinquishment of one of the embodied conditions through which profound parent-child love is ordinarily cultivated, thereby jeopardizing the foundations of human flourishing. The paper concludes by addressing a couple of potential objections to this Confucian critique.
