Abstract
Clinical operations leadership is increasingly important as health care organizations face a wide array of challenges, including mounting financial pressures, workforce shortages, and rising expectations to improve access and quality of care. Clinical operations leadership encompasses the design, implementation, and continuous adaptation of care delivery systems to optimize outcomes. In this article, we outline the central tenets of clinical operations leadership, including core leadership skills, operational infrastructure, evidence-based work design in practice, data and analytics support models, and common leadership pitfalls. We close with future directions for adapting clinical operations as artificial intelligence-enabled capabilities and robust analytics reshape clinical work.
