Abstract

The digital determinants of health refer to digitally mediated factors that increasingly shape lifestyle, behaviour, and social connections. Digital devices, infrastructure, and services-ranging from mobile phones, social media and online games to emerging technologies such as generative artificial intelligence and robotics-have become integral to everyday life in many parts of the world. These technologies are reshaping the way individuals and communities experience social and mental health, facilitating new forms of connection, belonging, and participation. At the same time, these dimensions of health can be threatened by some forms of engagement with these technologies, which might also reinforce existing inequities. In this Viewpoint, we examine the digital determinants of health within a framework of social, mental, and physical health and wellbeing, adopting a public health lens to harness digital technologies for improved health and wellbeing for all people.
