Abstract

A Holding Environment from the Start - Twenty Years of a Parent-Infant and Toddler Outpatient Clinic at the Winnicott Institute Hanover The Winnicott Institute Hanover is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. At the same time, the institute's Parent-Infant and Toddler Outpatient Clinic is marking its 20th anniversary. This interview documents a conversation with the two founders and long-standing directors of the clinic, Ulla Krüger and Renate Engelhardt-Tups. They discuss the history of the clinic's founding, their clinical approach and the central therapeutic factors of dyadic therapies, their theoretical positioning between Winnicott and Dornes, and changes in parenthood they have observed over two decades of practice. Central to the interview is the thesis that early intervention primarily requires a particular therapeutic stance: calm, confidence, and a guilt-relieving atmosphere - a stance the interviewees describe as "grandmother transference". The conversation is intended as a contribution to the institutional history of psychoanalytically oriented dyadic therapies in Germany.
