Abstract

Spectral gain characterization of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) routinely uses broadband ASE loading, which saturates the amplifier but presents a continuous spectrum, not a defined channel set. A saturation tone with a weak probe offers a defined-load alternative, yet its fidelity to a multi-channel load, and its dependence on the pumping architecture, remain experimentally unestablished. We compare tone-based and nine-channel WDM gain spectra for a C-band EDFA across six pumping configurations at -10 and 0 dBm. The closest agreement reaches 0.23 dB RMSE; the optimal tone is set by the pumping configuration but independent of pump direction under 980 nm. Saturation removes the correctable level offset, leaving a shape-limited residual.
