Abstract

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people’s health is a public health issue impacting a significant portion of the population. Health-related decisions are made in an artificially uncertain and contentious climate in which knowledge plays a central role. Rapid developments in the field, along with the increasing politicization of language in research, contribute to the proliferation of terms that shape and complicate bibliographic searches.
This study of the journal Santé publique focuses on publications available online since 2001 that include content related to the health of TGD individuals. The selected publications underwent bibliometric and lexical analyses to identify publication trends and improve future bibliographic search strategies.
Among 2,347 online publications, 75 contain terms related to the health of TGD people. Publication rates have increased since 2022, but a clear gap remains compared to international output. French-language research remains limited and is largely structured around HIV/AIDS. Certain terms dominate scientific communication, suggesting conceptual biases and gaps in current knowledge, particularly in field-based research.
Non-binary, transfeminine, and transmasculine populations remain underrepresented in the literature. Conceptual and linguistic choices within public institutions raise questions about the political dimensions of health promotion for these groups. The special issue and dedicated conference session served as catalysts for increased publication activity.
The health of TGD individuals remains an underdeveloped area of research and is insufficiently integrated into broader scientific discourse.
