Abstract

Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the efficacy of vermiculite as technological additive for piglets and pigs for fattening. The additive is already authorised for use for chickens for fattening, chickens reared for laying or reproduction and hens. In the previous opinion, the FEEDAP Panel concluded that vermiculite is efficacious as anticaking agent when used at 10,000 mg/kg complete feed. However, the FEEDAP Panel noted that the concentration shown to be efficacious (10,000 mg/kg complete feed) was twice the safe use level for suckling and weaned piglets and pigs for fattening (5000 mg/kg complete feed). Based on the new data provided covering different types of feed for pigs, the FEEDAP Panel concluded that vermiculite is efficacious as an anticaking agent, when used at 5000 mg/kg complete feed.
