Abstract
We aim to review novel family planning simulation models published since 2017. We will focus primarily on models for simulating abortion care, given the increased need for simulation education in this area post-Dobbs.
Since the last current opinion on simulation in family planning in 2017, three novel dilation and evacuation models have been created. These are all low-fidelity and include a Styrofoam uterine model, a plastic bottle with a Cornish hen model, and a collapsible water bottle model. No new first-trimester abortion models have been published. In regard to other procedures in family planning since 2017, there has been limited published work on intrauterine device and implant simulation. There have also been two mini-laparotomy models created to simulate post-partum sterilization, both shown to improve learner confidence and skill.
Simulation training has been highly beneficial to medical training across specialties. Specifically, in the family planning space where traditional clinic settings vary in their procedural offerings, simulation models can help bridge educational gaps. We encourage readers to collaborate with one another to create and disseminate models and communication-focused simulations to enhance training and, in turn, patient care.
