Abstract

Two molecular events occur at gene ends: 3'-end processing of pre-mRNA and transcription termination. Decades of studies have functionally coupled them, yet we discuss evidence that changes in these processes can occur in opposing directions. Acknowledging this paradox is necessary to gain a real understanding of how gene ends are shaped.
