Abstract
18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous intervention directs biopsy needles and ablation probes to the metabolically active, viable regions of tumors, overcoming the inability of conventional anatomic imaging to distinguish viable tumor from necrosis and posttreatment change. This review covers patient preparation, radiation safety for patients and procedural staff, technical approaches including robotic arm-assisted navigation, organ-specific evidence for biopsy across thoracic, abdominal, and skeletal sites, and PET/CT-guided ablation, including intraprocedural margin assessment techniques. Evidence consistently demonstrates improved diagnostic yields, reduced nondiagnostic rates, and effective assessment of ablation margins, with radiation exposures well within established safety limits.
