Abstract

Clinical internship represents a demanding transition period for nursing students, during which maintaining positive psychological wellbeing is important for both personal development and professional preparation. Although life satisfaction has been increasingly recognized as an important indicator of wellbeing among nursing students, existing research has largely treated it as a homogeneous construct, with limited attention to potential differences in life satisfaction patterns within this population. Moreover, little is known about how distinct life satisfaction profiles are associated with flourishing, a broader indicator of positive psychological functioning.
This study aims to identify and describe the potential categories of life satisfaction among intern nursing students and to elucidate the flourishing levels associated with each category.
A cross-sectional study was conducted using three data collection instruments: a self-designed general information questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Flourishing Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Latent profile analysis, descriptive analysis, and Welch's test were performed on data collected from 315 intern nursing students from a tertiary hospital in Hunan Province, China.
The results of the latent profile analysis (LPA) indicated that a three-profile model was the most appropriate, supporting the existence of three distinct life satisfaction profiles among intern nursing students: the low life satisfaction group (8.2%), the moderate life satisfaction group (58.4%), and the high life satisfaction group (33.4%), with a relatively high entropy value (0.952). The results demonstrated a good profile solution, with significant differences among the three profiles. Welch's test further revealed significant differences in flourishing levels among the different life satisfaction groups, with the high life satisfaction group scoring higher than the moderate group, and the moderate group scoring higher than the low life satisfaction group.
Our results revealed the heterogeneity of life satisfaction among intern nursing students, indicating that those in the high life satisfaction group tended to exhibit higher levels of flourishing. These findings provide important implications and reference value for nursing educators, who can develop customized educational programs based on the different types of life satisfaction and the corresponding levels of flourishing among nursing students.
