Abstract

The objective was to analyze the implications of the oil spill crime disaster, resulting from the neo-extractivist development model in Latin America, on the social determination of the health of artisanal fishing communities on the coast of Pernambuco. This is a study based on the Social Reproduction of Health Matrix proposed by Samaja. Secondary and primary data were used, produced through interviews and an epidemiological survey with artisanal fishermen from the 16 municipalities on the coast of Pernambuco and interviews with municipal and state health managers in Pernambuco; those through documentary analysis of environmental legislation, open letters from scientific institutions, publications from social movements and government reports. The results indicated degradation of the coastal ecosystem, socioeconomic vulnerability, failures in the State's response and effects on the health of artisanal fishermen who align themselves with the process of Latin American neo-extractivism. It is concluded that this disaster expresses socio-environmental conflicts and cultural rupture, reinforcing injustices and socio-environmental racism and posing the need for effective policies of surveillance, reparation and social protection.
