Abstract

Tri-Agency-funded researchers in Canada will soon be required, with few exceptions, to deposit data and make them available, including for possible reuse by others. These new requirements will upend the data management practices of sociologists in Canada, especially qualitative researchers. In this essay, I review the emerging Tri-Agency requirements and explore current data management practices of sociologists in Canada through a scan of CRS articles. I situate data deposit and availability in the broader context of open science, and then explore debates-epistemological and ethical-among qualitative researchers outside of Canada where data deposit mandates are already in place. I briefly raise issues that require the attention of (especially qualitative) sociologists in Canada relating to community-based research and to data access. I conclude the essay by recommending sociologists-especially qualitative sociologists-assess our readiness for the new data regime.
