Abstract

Since Hemoporfin for Injection was approved for marketing in China in 2016, Hemoporfin-mediated photodynamic therapy (Hemoporfin PDT) has become an important option for the treatment of port wine stain (PWS) birthmarks in China. The active ingredient of Hemoporfin is hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) which is a second-generation porphyrin type photosensitizer preparation with a well-defined chemical structure. This article is the second part of a series focused on the research progress of Hemoporfin and aims to systematically review the clinical applications of Hemoporfin PDT in the treatment of PWS birthmarks. The article will highlight key clinical trial evidence, influential factors affecting efficacy and the safety profiles. Clinical studies related to pediatric patients will also be discussed. Available real-world evidence indicates that Hemoporfin PDT is an effective and safe treatment option for naïve and pulsed dye laser (PDL)-resistant PWS of children and adults.
