Abstract

In the tradition of Arabic medicine, bloodletting therapy was introduced through the centuries-long translation movement and systematically inherited from Galenic medical theory. As a result, it transcended the scope of early "Prophetic Medicine", and further incorporated its own clinical observations and anatomical practices, forming a distinctive therapeutic system that exerted a profound influence on the Latin West and even on early-modern medicine. A review of its development shows that it was continuously engaged in two-way exchanges with Western medicine. This historical perspective provides an important comparative framework for future studies of bloodletting therapy in China.
