Abstract

Methane (CH4), as the principal component of natural gas, shale gas, and combustible ice, serves as a strategic resource crucial for optimizing carbon utilization and reducing reliance on petroleum. Electrocatalytic methane conversion, driven by clean electrical energy, enables the selective transformation of methane under mild conditions, offering a promising alternative to conventional energy-intensive and high-emission processes. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in the electrocatalytic conversion of methane into high-value-added products. The article begins by explaining the fundamental principles of electrocatalytic methane conversion and highlighting its distinct advantages over conventional methods. Subsequently, we focus on a variety of target products, including C1 products, C2+ products, and other high-value products, offering a detailed discussion of the latest developments in diverse electrocatalytic systems and providing an in-depth analysis of their respective reaction mechanisms. Finally, the review will conclude by identifying the key scientific and technological challenges currently faced by this field and by proposing perspectives on future research directions and development opportunities, with the aim of serving as a valuable resource for advancing this emerging area even further.
