Abstract

While the synthesis of a molecular tungsten-iridium complex remains elusive, the silica-supported tungsten species, (SiO)W(CtBu)(CH2tBu)2, readily reacts with Cp*IrH4, leading to heterobimetallic surface sites, (SiO)W(CH2tBu)2(H)nIrCp*. This demonstrates the power of surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) for assembling architectures that are otherwise inaccessible in solution. This silica-supported W-Ir material shows higher catalytic activity than Hf-Ir and Ta-Ir analogs in arene H/D exchange.
