Abstract

This study compared the effects of sprint (SPRT), coordinative (COORD), and combined (COMB) exercises on physical performance in small-sided games (SSGs). Twenty-four under-16 male soccer players participated in a repeated-measures design, performing four interventions (Control [CONT], SPRT, COORD, and COMB) prior to SSGs in a 4v4+GK format. The total distance, distance covered in different speed zones, acceleration, and deceleration were analyzed. Data were assessed using generalized estimating equations, adopting p ≤ .05 for statistical significance. A lower total distance (p = .02) and shorter distances in the initial acceleration zones (0.0-0.99 m·s-2; p = .013) were observed after COMB compared with CONT. A similar result was also observed in the deceleration zone between -2.00 and -2.99 m·s-2, where a lower value was found after COMB compared to CONT (p = .043). Furthermore, COMB (p = .021) and SPRT (p = .023) reduced the number of decelerations compared with CONT. Overall, the combined condition was associated with selective reductions in specific physical performance variables during subsequent SSGs, whereas most speed-zone, acceleration, and deceleration variables remained unchanged. Therefore, combined coordinative and sprint tasks should be incorporated with caution when SSGs are intended to provide a high physical stimulus.
