Abstract
Despite the scientific advancement and increasing interest in the use of pharmacogenomic tests to determine how genes interact with medications, such tests require nuanced understanding and interpretation in the treatment of pediatric depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Pharmacogenomic testing can be useful in certain populations to identify a psychotropic medication's tolerability or adverse effects. Pharmacogenomic testing cannot predict which medication will provide the best clinical response in a specific patient with a specific mental illness. Unfortunately, some commercial testing kits provide clinical guidance based on genetic tests that may not have clinical relevance in an over-simplified color-coded format which can be misleading for the patient and for the clinician. It is imperative that pediatricians understand the utility and limitations regarding the use of such tests so they can correct misinformation and provide evidence-informed care to their patients.
