Abstract
Career pathways within dentistry are increasingly diverse, offering opportunities for progression beyond traditional clinical roles. This opinion piece reflects on the author's personal journey from joining the profession as a trainee dental nurse at the age of 16 to qualifying as a dental therapist and ultimately becoming a practice owner. Along the way, a range of professional and personal challenges have been encountered, including adapting to higher education, overcoming self-doubt, balancing clinical practice with motherhood, and navigating the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. These experiences strengthened the author's resilience, reinforced the value of lifelong learning, and shaped their approach to patient centred care. The establishment of a practice represented the culmination of years of determination, ambition and professional development. In sharing this journey, the author demonstrates the opportunities available within dentistry and encourages other dental care professionals to pursue their aspirations, regardless of the obstacles they may encounter.
