Abstract
The debate on an opioid crisis in Denmark points in two directions. While prescriptions for opioids are declining, there is a marked increase in illegal use, predominantly among young people. There is still a lack of knowledge in the healthcare system regarding optimal dosing, treatment duration, and the risk of dependence. In addition, evidence is limited on the sharing of leftover prescription medications between citizens and on systematic monitoring of illegal opioid use. This review concludes that a comprehensive national strategy is needed to prevent an opioid crisis in Denmark.
