Abstract

Fetal growth restriction has long been associated with reduced nephron number and chronic kidney disease, but its relationship with acute kidney injury has remained unclear. Fog-Høyer et al. demonstrated that fetal growth restriction increases acute kidney injury risk from infancy through early adulthood, particularly in children with congenital anomalies. We examine the study's strengths, limitations, biological basis, and clinical relevance, highlighting opportunities for targeted risk stratification, preventive care, and future research.
