Abstract
Photovoltaics and solar thermal collectors each face limitations in efficiently harnessing solar energy. This study presents a hybrid semi-transparent perovskite-photovoltaic and concentrating solar thermal (SPV-CST) collector designed to maximize solar energy utilization through spectral splitting. The perovskite solar cell captures both diffuse and direct solar irradiance, converting shorter-wavelength sunlight into electricity while transmitting the near-infrared spectrum. The SPV-CST collector achieves effective thermal decoupling between the photovoltaic and thermal components. Specifically, the lens concentrates the transmitted light onto a solar-thermal collector, producing heat at temperatures ranging from 88.0°C to 154.9°C. Meanwhile, the operating temperature of the perovskite solar cell is limited to 38.5°C to reduce thermal stability issues and preserve its electrical efficiency at 13.8%. Using state-of-the-art semi-transparent perovskite cells from the literature, the SPV-CST collector is projected to improve its electrical efficiency from 13.8% to 21.3%, with only a slight reduction in thermal efficiency from 20.7% to 19.2% at 100°C output temperature. This work provides insights into the design, modeling, and operational optimization of hybrid solar collectors, paving the way for sustainable solar energy applications across diverse conditions and climates.
