Abstract
The article presents the current demographic agenda in the Russian media. It is analyzed and interpreted as a system of media-constructed thematic frames, regional differences, and indicators of audience engagement. The empirical basis of the study is based on the results of content analysis of Russian media reports from 2021 to 2025. The study uses methods and procedures of quantitative and qualitative content analysis, thematic coding, frequency and comparative analysis, calculation of regional and federal district shares, and significance of visibility and engagement indicators. It is substantiated that the demographic topic is more often presented in the media through national projects, government programs, employment, retraining, family support measures, and regional governance, rather than through demographic indicators of birth rates, mortality rates, and migration rates. However, it has been recorded that it is not official reports that are attractive to the audience, but rather publications where the demographic topic is associated with a clear conflict of opinions, an unusual initiative, a social risk, and a widely publicized statement. A pronounced regional asymmetry in the media agenda has been identified: Moscow and the Central Federal District concentrate the largest volumes of messages and audience response. The study concludes that the media plays an important role in the public interpretation of demographic processes, challenges, and relevant management decisions at the federal and regional levels. The practical significance of the results obtained lies in the possibility of using them to adjust the information support for demographic policy in Russian regions.
