Abstract
Fencing has been contested at every modern Olympic Games since 1896, giving it one of the longest continuous records in sports and an opportunity to examine whether an optimal age at medal-winning exists and whether it has changed. We examined every individual Olympic fencing medallist from 1896 to 2024, resulting in 379 medals won by 286 athletes across foil, épée, and sabre. Of these, the available birth date records of 282 athletes (>95% of the total) were retained, resulting in 375 medals with a date of birth resolved to the day of each event, and the analyses based on those. Across the full 128 years, the average medallist was 28.8 years old, and gold, silver, and bronze medallists were the same age as one another (p = 0.195). The mean age of male medallists changed little, falling by approximately one-third of a year per decade (p = 0.006), with no discontinuity at the end of the amateur era in 1972. However, the change pertained to the range of ages rather than the mean. Early medallists ranged from 16.8 to 50.0 years, and no male athlete has won an Olympic fencing medal beyond the age of 42 in the past 50 years. Ages were approximately 1.5 times as variable before 1972 as after it, and the narrowing occurred in foil, épée, and sabre alike. In the past two decades, the age of medal winners was concentrated in a narrow band: the mean age of medal winners was 27.7 years, and 50% all medals were won between 24.1 and 30.8 years. That band was similar across foil, épée, and sabre, and similar for women and men. Among Olympic medallists, therefore, the age at which the medals are won has not shifted; what has diminished is the winning of medals far from it. However, whether the same holds below the podium is not addressed by these data.
