Abstract
In situ lichens were used to assess the atmospheric deposition of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the vicinity of the Dexing ore cluster. Most PTEs showed moderate to very high pollution levels and moderate to significant enrichment factor (EF), with Pb (3.85-14.14) identified as the most serious pollutant, followed by Mn (0.50-10.72), Cu (1.11-5.50), Cr (1.07-3.94) and As (3.16-3.18). Cd (128.54-256.57) and Pb (80.71-223.55) posed a considerable to high ecological risk (Er), while other PTEs generally posed moderate to considerable risk. A multi-element ecological risk assessment showed a considerable to very high overall potential ecological risk index (RI) (348.53-669.74) in the study area. Children had higher non-carcinogenic risks than adults, while the carcinogenic risks for adults were higher than for children. Cd, Pb and As were the major contributors to non-carcinogenic risk, whereas the carcinogenic risk was mainly controlled by Cr and As. Higher levels of pollution, ecological risk and non-carcinogenic risk were found in the central, northeastern and northwestern areas, while higher carcinogenic risk was found in the northeastern and southern areas. Therefore, promoting cleaner production in mining activities is necessary to mitigate PTEs emissions, and to protect the ecological environment and residents' health.
