Abstract
The Jinshuitan Reservoir in southeastern China serves a dual role as both a conservation area for national germplasm reserve and a drinking water source, making its water quality protection essential ecosystem and human health. To assess heavy metal contamination, source characteristics, and associated health risks, water samples were collected from five sites over four seasons and analyzed for 11 metals. Mean concentrations followed the order Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu > Cr > Se > Pb > As > Ni > Hg > Cd, with all values below the limits specified by the Chinese Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water (GB 3838 - 2002). Principal component analysis identified three major source components, reflecting mixed natural and anthropogenic influences. Health risk assessment indicated that drinking water ingestion was the dominant exposure pathway, with Cr contributing the largest share of carcinogenic risk although overall health risks remained within acceptable limits. The Newerow pollution index showed excellent water quality throughout the study period (PN < 0.7), with the highest values (0.37) observed at the LQ5 in winter. Despite the low overall pollution level, Hg exhibited comparatively pollution index values and warrants continued monitoring. These findings provide a scientific basis for water quality management and long-term environmental protection in this ecologically important drinking water source.
