Abstract

Since 2025, the Dutch Healthcare authority allows direct home-based geriatric rehabilitation without prior inpatient geriatric rehabilitation. This qualitative study evaluated the feasibility of direct home-based geriatric rehabilitation through interviews with five persons who received direct home-based geriatric rehabilitation and five informal caregivers. Participants appreciated the expertise, empathy, and clear communication of the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team. Digital support by a user-friendly tablet was predominantly well-received for its ease of use and ability to maintain contact. The blended approach-combining home-based and digital support-was seen as motivating. Findings suggest direct home-based geriatric rehabilitation is feasible if delivered by experienced professionals with attention to emotional needs and digital literacy.
