Abstract

Metabolic surgery has emerged as the most effective long-term treatment for obesity, a global health epidemic associated with serious conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea. Updated 2022 guidelines have expanded eligibility, allowing more patients to benefit from surgical intervention. Modern procedures-including sleeve gastrectomy, SADI-S, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and duodenal switch-are now safer, with low morbidity and mortality rates. Careful preoperative planning, multidisciplinary evaluation, and proper procedure selection are essential for optimal outcomes. Advances in laparoscopic and robotic techniques, along with adherence to sound surgical principles, help minimize complications and improve patient safety and long-term success.
