Abstract

The Vessel Health and Preservation framework was established with the aim of increasing the implementation of evidence-based vascular access practices and ultimately improving patient outcomes. This model was designed to place attention on reducing infection risks and drive more effective assessments of site selections, appropriate device selection, and increased application of strategies that reduce vascular harm, complications, and patient discomfort. Many conventional nonevidence informed practices with peripheral intravenous catheters continue to persist in critical care. Understanding best evidence to guide vascular access will positively impact patient safety and outcomes.
