Abstract

Healthcare accounts for 7% of Singapore's carbon emissions. Given the role of planetary health in health outcomes, healthcare must be sustainable, evidence- and value-based. This consensus paper provides Singapore-specific recommendations to guide sustainable anaesthesia and intensive care practice while maintaining clinical care standards. It aims to support discussion, planning and implementation of initiatives without superseding clinical judgement or local policies. A workgroup from the Singapore Society of Anaesthesiologists conducted a review of international sustainability guidelines, peer-reviewed literature and evidence. Iterative consensus building was undertaken through discussion and consultation. Evidence was derived from life cycle analyses, laboratory or environmental studies, and quality improvement initiatives rather than conventional randomised controlled trials, but can nevertheless provide a robust scientific basis for recommendations underpinned by the triple bottom line framework. This position statement calls upon anaesthesiologists in Singapore to exercise leadership and stewardship to reduce emissions without compromising care.
