Abstract
This study presents a smartphone-based approach for passenger-car ride comfort evaluation using an Android application that performs vibration acquisition and signal processing directly on the device. The Ride Comfort application records tri-axial acceleration and computes FFT, Welch power spectral density (PSD) with a 66.66% overlapping Hann window, 1/3-octave spectra, and frequency-weighted RMS acceleration following ISO 2631-1 principles. Six comparative field tests were conducted with an Opel Astra, Skoda Octavia, and Volkswagen Passat at approximately 30 km/h on Track A and 50 km/h on Track B. At 30 km/h, the Octavia, Passat, and Astra recorded aw values of 0.668, 0.712, and 0.812 m·s-2, respectively. At 50 km/h, the Passat, Octavia, and Astra recorded 0.272, 0.432, and 0.539 m·s-2, respectively. Five repeatability tests with a Skoda Fabia at approximately 90 km/h on a fixed 3 km highway segment yielded a mean aw of 0.169 m·s-2, SD of 0.022 m·s-2, and CoV of 13.0%. The results demonstrate the feasibility of an integrated smartphone workflow for ride comfort assessment and repeatable measurement under a fixed vehicle-road-speed condition.
