Abstract
Over the past decade, there have been advancements in our knowledge of the pathogenesis of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), resulting in diagnostic and prognostic biomarker discoveries and an expansion of treatment options. This article cites recent literature to aid clinicians in the understanding and awareness of diagnostic and treatment pitfalls and strategies. An overview of the current understanding of the immunopathogenesis of AIH, the diagnostic strategies to effectively exclude other chronic liver diseases, the evidence for emerging diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers, and the management strategies for typical and difficult to treat cases is provided.
