Abstract

Hallux valgus is a common structural deformity due to misalignment of the first metatarsophalangeal joint that can lead to functional impairment, pain, and difficulties with shoe wear. There are drastic differences in the epidemiology between men and women. Women have a significantly higher prevalence of hallux valgus deformities. The etiology and progression of the deformity is highly intricate due to the interplay of anatomic considerations, hormonal changes, behaviors, and genetics. Based on risk factors, a patient-specific treatment algorithm is necessary. Future studies should address the underrepresentation of males seen in the currently-available research.
