Abstract

Hemoglobin S (HbS), which confers protection against malaria, could exert selective pressure on the genome of Plasmodium falciparum. Forster et al. identified new parasite variants, including two variants shared by CLAG3 paralogs, that reduce the protective effect of HbS. These findings support the hypothesis of coevolution between humans and parasites.
