Abstract

We described a new microsporidium, Trichotuzetia vicinus n. sp., from the adipose tissue of Cyclops vicinus sampled from a eutrophic water body in Lianyungang city, Jiangsu province, China. Infected copepods exhibited opacity due to numerous spores accumulated in their adipose tissue. Electron microscopy revealed that all developmental stages had isolated nuclei. Uninucleate meronts resided in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm. Mature spores were pyriform, measuring 5.24 ± 0.16 (4.89-5.73) μm long and 3.04 ± 0.12 (2.84-3.33) μm wide. The polaroplast was bipartite with tightly packed anterior lamellae and wide posterior lamellae. Polar filaments were isofilar, coiled 6-7 turns, and arranged in one row. The exospore was composed of four layers. Phylogenetic analysis based on SSU gene sequences indicated that the present species (PZ724923, 1291 bp) clustered with Trichotuzetia guttata within Gurleyidae. Based on morphological and ultrastructural characteristics, as well as molecular data, a new species was erected and named Trichotuzetia vicinus n. sp.
