Abstract
Chagas disease is endemic in the Americas. In Argentina, approximately 750,000 people are living with Chagas disease. With a prevalence of 1.59 per 100 inhabitants, it is considered a public health problem. This study presents the development of a patient journey map based on the experiences of individuals with suspected Chagas disease. We analyzed the records of 205 patients who sought care through a support program for individuals with concerns about Chagas disease in Argentina. By systematizing personal experiences through qualitative analysis, we were able to highlight the critical points of contact between patients and the healthcare system during the diagnosis and treatment process, thereby identifying barriers to accessing the healthcare services. The main contribution of this analysis is to demonstrate that systemic barriers outweigh personal barriers as obstacles to accessing diagnosis and, above all, treatment. The most significant barrier proved to be incorrect or insufficient information provided by healthcare professionals, which points to targeted training initiatives for healthcare teams as a strategy for improving access to treatment.
