Abstract
Hydroxymethyl-functionalized iodotriazolium halides were developed as highly active catalysts for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide to epoxides. The optimized catalyst 3j promoted the cycloaddition of CO2 to styrene oxide at a catalyst loading of 0.1 mol % under 1 atm of CO2, achieving a TON of 640. Control experiments support the contributions of the halogen-bond donor, hydrogen-bond donor, and nucleophilic counteranion to the catalytic activity. Catalyst 3a also promoted double and triple CO2 cycloadditions with selected multifunctional epoxides at a catalyst loading of 15 mol % under 1 atm of CO2.
