Abstract
Essential oils are used in animals, mainly in research, for the development of new drugs. However, more are needed to characterize their sedative and anesthetic properties in fish. Therefore, the objective of this work was to determine the anesthetic potential of the essential oils of Prunus myrtifolia, Pilocarpus pennatifolius, and Casearia sylvestris in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) and analyze their chemical composition through gas chromatography. Concentrations for rapid induction and recovery from anesthesia were tested in the range of 50 to 300 mg L-1, while prolonged exposure was observed in the range of 10 to 100 mg L-1. The essential oils of P. pennatifolius and C. sylvestris are suitable for sedation, as they did not induce anesthesia or cause visible adverse effects or mortality. Thus, these essential oils are promising for future investigations in the studied species. However, the essential oil of P. myrtifolia is not recommended as an anesthetic or sedative due to the signs of toxicity observed.
