Abstract
The evolution towards "point of care" diagnostics is a strong trend, made possible by miniaturization and the use of microfluidic devices. One stumbling point in this evolution has been the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which is necessary for DNA-based diagnostics but normally requires bulky and expensive equipment. Recent technical developments have resulted in handheld devices that allow decentralized operation and can even be patient-operated. This opens up many new opportunities for molecular diagnostics.
