Abstract

We describe a modified Matsen technique for closed reduction of locked anterior shoulder dislocations based on a single case. The humeral head is first mobilized anterolaterally and disengaged from the anterior glenoid rim using the examiner's second arm as a fulcrum. Subsequent axial traction in slight abduction and gentle external rotation then guide it posteriorly back into the glenoid. The technique is performed by two people with the patient under analgesia or procedural sedation. In an 85-year-old female patient, atraumatic reduction was achieved after standard maneuvers had failed. No benefit over established techniques can be inferred from this single observation.
