Abstract
Understanding the fate of hydrophobic organic compounds under eutrophication management is critical for assessing aquatic ecological risks in inland lakes. In the present study, passive samplers were deployed in two eutrophic lakes (Lake Taihu and Lake Gehu, China) to investigate the occurrences and sediment-water exchange dynamics of dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polycyclic musks. The dissolved concentrations of PAHs were 2.4-160 ng L-1 in overlying water and 7.5-55 ng L-1 in sediment porewater, whereas the levels of galaxolide (HHCB), only detected polycyclic musk, ranged from 0.08-47 and 0.93-29 ng L-1, respectively. Sediment records showed that the clear declines in accumulations of PAHs and HHCB may be associated with eutrophication-control and wastewater-management measures. Source analysis revealed that combustion emission and domestic wastewater were the major contributors to dissolved PAHs and HHCB. The sediment-water diffusion fluxes of PAHs and HHCB varied between -15 and 21 ng m-2 d-1. Sediment acted as a source for 3- and 4-ring PAHs in the overlying water. The contents of organic matter in sediment induced by eutrophication and temperature may regulate the exchange of 5-ring PAHs (BbF, BaP, and PER) and HHCB, respectively. These findings underscore the need for continued control of industrial combustion and domestic wastewater inputs to reduce organic pollution in these eutrophic lakes.
