Dear Reader,
I am Elisa Garcia, born in 2003 and finalizing my last year of the Science Programme at the University of Maastricht. I was born in Germany but have grown up mainly in London, Madrid, and Vancouver Island. I graduated high school at the 'Schweizer Schule Madrid' and obtained the Maturitätsdiploma. Since I am from a diverse background, I grew up speaking Spanish, German, and English. Therefore, I am fluent in all three languages obtaining C1 certificates and above in German and English. I believe my ability to learn languages is one of my strong suits, as it allows me to communicate easily with different people in different countries. Driven by a strong work ethic and personal ambition, I consistently set high standards for myself both academically and socially. I am devoted to continuous learning, particularly within the scientific realm, and I am dedicated to exploring ways in which scientific advancements can positively impact both human health and the environment.
In June 2024, I completed my Bachelor of Science at Maastricht University and acquired some professional experience before diving into my Masters. The Science Programme offered students to specialize in a field of interest with mine being regenerative medicine and molecular biology. For this, I have taken courses mainly regarding cell, micro, molecular biology, regenerative medicine, organic chemistry, biotechnology, etc, and those respective laboratory practicals. In the future, I would like to pursue a career involving biotechnology and regenerative medicine. I am excited by the potential of biotechnology and regenerative medicine, particularly the application of organoids in drug and medical research. Moreover, my bachelor's thesis research was conducted on the Dynamic Stimulation of 3-dimensional Complex Structures on the Differentiative Behavior of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells. Here I acquired the following skills: Laboratory skills, Biofabrication, Bioengineering, Osteochondral Regeneration, Scaffold design and production, coding, biochemical assays, and immunohistochemical staining.
Upon completion of my Bachelor of Science degree, I am eager to gain practical experience in the field before pursuing my Master's degree. I am open to opportunities that allow me to contribute to the scientific community and enhance my understanding of real-world applications of my studies. I am available for employment starting in June 2024 and am also interested in exploring potential internships that align with my interests and aspirations.

Research Intern Feb 2024 - Jun 2024
4-month research project focused on bone tissue engineering and the "Dynamic stimulation of 3-dimensional complex structures for the advancement towards mechano-instructive scaffolds". The research goals of this project included:
(I) The determination of dynamically active mechanoinstructive scaffolds for bone tissue applications.
(II) The development of protocols to fabricate scaffolds with optimizable mechanical properties.
(III) The validation of the effects of dynamic simulation of hMSC orientation and differentiation.
(IV) The control of hMSC stemness through mechanoinstructive patterning.
Scaffolds were designed and developed with a Rhino code, followed by culturing, and seeding hMSCs to subject them to dynamic trials. The experimental analysis involved visual, biochemical, and immunohistochemical methods to assess the responsiveness of hMSCs under static and dynamic conditions.
